12 QUESTIONS WITH GARY HOOKER

Can you give us a brief history of your playing career?
After a brief career in Southern Florida in the late 70′s, I relocated to Nashville in the early 80′s. I have worked for Dave Loggins, Gary Morris, Sara Evans, Brad Paisley.

What inspired you to start playing guitar?
Hearing Lonnie Mack’s version of ‘Memphis’ on the radio in about 1963.

What was your first electric guitar?
Greco hollowbody.

What are your top 5 favorite records?
Today choices:
1. The Byrds – Untitled
2. The Allman Brothers Band – Live at the Fillmore East
3. The Beach Boys – Pet Sounds
4. Albert King – Best Of
5. Steely Dan – Royal Scam

What was the proudest moment and/or performance of your playing career?
A 1992 appearance at the White House as singer Gary Morris’ accompanist.

How did you hear about Reverend?
I’ve kept tabs on Reverend pretty much since they came out. I do regret not getting one a lot sooner, but I’m catching up.

What Reverend guitar(s) are you using?
A Ron Asheton Signature and a Volcano.

What do you like about your Reverend guitar?
You can tell a lot of thought went into the designs. These guitars combine the best features of retro/vintage designs and add their own twist with updated parts, great playability, solid tones and a unique look. These are not cookie cutter guitars and that’s a good thing.

What amps and pedals do you currently use?
Road amps: Dr. Z – (EZG50, Pres. ES, KT45), Valvetrain – (735 Signature)
Smith Custom Pedals: Teese Wizard Wah, Keeley Katana, Diamond Compressor and Memory Lane, Dunlap Carbon Copy, Hermida Zen Drive, Dr. Scientist Tremolessence Z-Vex Seek-Trem, Pro Analog Power Driver.

Do you have any unusual hobbies, skills, or pastimes you’d like to share with us?
Civil War, collecting BBQ sauce bottles.

Do you have any advice for up and coming players?
Rhythm playing is just as important as soloing. Also practicing with a metronome always helps develop good timing.
