12 QUESTIONS WITH EIDEN THORR

Can you give us a brief history of your playing career?
I started playing out as a singer for a couple of bands and moved to the drums for a few others. I played a little guitar along the way, but it wasn’t until I starting playing with Valient Thorr that I developed any kind of style on the guitar

What inspired you to start playing?
My dad played in bands ever since I was born – I was put to sleep with Pink Floyd on the stereo. I didn’t start playing until way later, but I know that had a lot to do with it. I still get goosebumps when I hear Pink Floyd

What was your first electric guitar?
It was called a Memphis. It had a strat body with a humbucker in it – some knockoff of a Kramer or something like that. I was too young and didn’t know what I was doing. I think I broke it jumping on the bed or something.

What are your top 5 favorite records?
Depends on my mood. I have a lot of favorites. Today I will say (in no particular order):

The Jesus Lizard – Liar
Pink Floyd – The Wall (live)
Captain Beefheart – Trout Mask Replica
Crass – Best Before (even though its a collection of other material, its put together in a seamless way.)
Mahavishnu Orchestra- Birds of Fire

(P.S.- It may be different tomorrow….I’ll let you know)

What was the proudest moment and/or performance of your playing career?
When people I listen to and respect give us a thumbs up I feel pretty good about it. Performance wise, I am kinda hard on myself. A lot of times I feel like I should have done better, but its good for me. I feel like it pushes me a bit.

How did you hear about Reverend?
I’m not quite sure how I heard about Reverend. It’s a name I was familiar with, but it wasn’t until I met the lovely Ken and Joe – who came out to a show and let me check ‘em out first hand – that I became familiar with the instruments themselves.

What Reverend guitar(s)/basses are you using?
I am using a Sensei HB – it’s a badass.

What do you like about your Reverend guitar?
Its a very versatile guitar! It can go from mean sounding to almost a rounded Strat sound with a turn of the volume and tone knobs. The controls are very expressive…and it looks real cool

What amps and pedals do you currently use?
Depending on the tour, our time slot and the room I usually use Marshall JCM 800 and a Mesa Boogie Stiletto blended through an a/b switch. For pedals it’s an Ibanez Tube Screamer, a Custom Audio Electronics wah, an Mxr Phase 90, a DD-20 Giga Delay and a Korg Pitch Black tuner.

Do you have any unusual hobbies, skills, or pastimes you’d like to share with us?
I Party.

Do you have any advice for up and coming players?
I’m still waiting on advice myself.

Please tell us about any of your current projects, tours, cds, etc. we should know about:
I play guitar in Valient Thorr, I play drums in a band called The Kickass and another called The Church of Zann. We all play shows and stay active – between all of them we stay pretty busy.
