12 QUESTIONS WITH JOE PISTORIO – JOE’S MUSIC

Can you give a brief history of your store?
I started this store in 1980. Started with a 900 sf. building and now have three buildings with 11,500 sf.

Was there a particular person — a teacher, another store owner, a family member or friend, etc. — who inspired you to go into this business?
I started working at the Music Center in 1965. I was 15 yrs old and I needed the job because my father would only let me have a drum set if I took lessons and made the monthly payments which he arranged. I loved it there. I was able to get my high school to allow me to work co-op. That meant I went to school in the morning’s and to work in the afternoon for my Junior and Senior year. I was able to work full time and still play with a band on the weekends. In the summer I played 5 to 6 nights a week as well as work at the store. Life was great.

What instrument(s) do you play personally? Do you have a band?
I get paid to play drums. I am still playing 3 to 5 nights a week.

What makes your store different from the average “Big Box” music store?
My employees. We are all here because we want to be.
